How do i prevent Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcers are usually small and very painful caused by biting your tongue, cheeks ,sharp teeth , braces, improper fitting of dentures and very poor habit of brushing.

Mouth ulcers aren’t easily spreadable they usually lasts upto one or two weeks. However they are extremely painful or a long lasting mouth ulcers need an immediate consultation with the dentist.

TRIGGERING FACTORS:

Minor mouth injuries from dental work, hard brushing, sports injury, accidental bite, lack of essential vitamins like vitamin B12, dental braces, lack of proper sleep and emotional stress and fungal, viral and bacterial infections are all triggering factors and causes of mouth ulcers.

HOW DOES A MOUTH ULCER LOOK:

A minor mouth ulcer may be like sores that are small in size and oval or round in shape that heals in one or two weeks without any scars. some ulcers which are big have irregular shape and take a longer time to heal.

DIAGNOSIS:

A mouth ulcer can be diagnosed by a dentist through a visual examination. For a frequent, larger size and a prolonged ulcer tests can be conducted to test if any other medical conditions are there or not.

HERPES SIMPLEX INFECTION:

Oral herpes infection is an infection caused by herpes simplex virus. The virus can cause sores in the lips, gums, roof of the mouth and inside the cheeks. It can also cause symptoms such as fever and muscle aches. these sores can be really painful and can make eating and drinking difficult. these sores can extend upto chin and neck. the gums become sore, reddish in color and bleeding of gums can also be seen. it can also cause painful throat which can make swallowing also difficult. dry mouth can also happen. an immediate consultation with a dentist is needed for these kind of infection.

APHTHOUS ULCER:

Apthous ulcer is a common condition characterized by benign and non-contagious mouth ulcers in an other wise healthy individuals. in majority of cases the ulcers can last about 7 to 10 days and occurs in any region of the mouth. The ulcer can be triggered due to local trauma, stress, nutritional deficiency etc., These ulcers are usually self diagnosable.

TREATMENT OPTIONS:

There are different types of treatments for treating mouth ulcers like rinsing your mouth with salted water, applying ice packs to the damaged area, using topical anesthetic gels like orajel or mucopain gel ,taking healthy food with additional nutritional supplements like vitamin B12 and folic acid and B6.

How do I prevent mouth ulcers?

We should take some steps to prevent the mouth ulcers or it can be a triggering point for a dental visit . Mainly avoid spicy foods, foods which causes irritation to mouth, undergo a well balanced diet with additional vitamin supplements. Maintaining good hygiene like using dental floss and rinsing mouth after each meal and brushing twice in a day can also prevent mouth ulcers, adequate sleep and rest that can reduce stress can also prevent mouth ulcers. Finally perfect brushing methods can also prevent mouth ulcers.

Usually Mouth ulcers aren’t contagious and usually go away with one or two weeks. They are extremely painful or a long lasting mouth ulcers need an immediate consultation with the dentist.
