There are various types of braces available and the kind that you need depends on what your teeth require. Each dental brace is customized according to the requirement of the patient. Dental braces constitute a number of components. The most conspicuous part of the braces is the brackets, which are small metal squares fixed directly to the front of the teeth. These are usually made of stainless steel, but tooth-colored ceramic or plastic are also used because they look more inconspicuous.

The brackets can also be fixed to the back of the teeth so that they are less visible. Braces also contain orthodontic bands which are a kind of anchor for the brackets. They are made of stainless steel or polyurethane and wrap around each tooth. They are fixed using dental bonding substances. Spacers are used between teeth to create a space before the orthodontic bands are placed. Arch-wires, made of metal or clear material are attached to the brackets to aid in teeth movement. Small rubber rings or thin wires known as ties and rubber bands known as ligatures are used to fix the arch-wires to the brackets.

The last tooth is affixed with a buccal tube to hold the arch-wire firmly in place. There are springs placed between the brackets on the arch-wires to push, pull, open or close the spaces between teeth. Some people may also need headgear to fix their teeth irregularities. The braces on the upper teeth may, therefore, have headgear tubes to hold it in place.

The decision of getting braces is best taken with the help of an expert orthodontist. An ordinary dentist may be able to fix you up with braces, but their knowledge on the subject won’t be as thorough as that of an orthodontist. An orthodontist has comprehensive training that enables them to deal with issues of the jawbone and dental movement.  Therefore we would always recommend that you go an orthodontist to deal with your alignment issues.

Apollo White Dental has a large number of specialised services for people with various kinds of dental issues including crooked teeth and mal-alignment of the jawbone.
